Toys for Tots 8k Turkey Trot Race Recap!

On Thanksgiving, our family participated in the annual Toys for Tots Turkey Trot in Newport News, VA.  This is a fun family oriented race that includes a 1 mile race for kids, a 5k, and an 8k race.  This was our second year to run this particular Thanksgiving Day race. Like last year, it was loads of fun with great on course support and  Salvation Army volunteers providing hot chocolate and snacks before and after the race.

We chose the 8k because it is a new distance for all of us, and of course that meant we all got a PR!   The weather was perfect for running with the temperature hovering around 50 degrees and sunny skies.  Much of the race is on the Noland Trail at the Mariners Museum.  The trail is adjacent to the James River, making for a beautifully scenic course.  Our race started at 9:45am after the 5k and kids race.  This worked out perfectly for us to do advance preparations for our big Thanksgiving feast.
Pre Race...note the Wine and Dine shirt!
The Marines were out in force and I think the first two male finishers are part of the corps.  Our trio was not with the early finishers, but we all ran our best and were very pleased with the results.  As mentioned earlier, we all had a PR due to the new distance.

Tom and Christine, glad to be finished!
Pam loves her Mickey Marathon sweatshirt and her new race medal!

Pam placed first in her age group and Tom placed third in his!  Our family represented very well on the medal platform hehe!

    1. Thanks Sarah. Running is only sport where aging up is an advantage. I can't wait for 13 months and my big 60! haha

  5. I was there too (although my family and I ran the 5K)! This is too funny. I just discovered your blog about a week or so ago, and have enjoyed reading about your adventures. I just signed up for the Disney Princess Half Marathon, a big goal for me since my longest race to date is a 5K. Reading your blog has helped me to stay motivated and excited! Anyway, I remember commenting on one woman wearing a Disney running sweatshirt, and I bet it was Pam! Wish I'd clued in and said hi, but I hope to see you all around the area. Thanks again for the blog!

    1. Myra, So glad you signed up for the Princess Half. That was our first half marathon (2011)and first Disney race and we absolutely love it. My sister will be joining us again in 2013 and we are super excited about that. Yes, I was wearing the Mickey sweatshirt at the race. So sorry we did not get a chance to meet. Hopefully we will have a meetup at the Princess and we can get acquainted then. Happy training and thanks for the nice comments.
