2013 Goals

I hope you had a wonderful evening ringing in the new year!  While I'm not much into New Year's Eve, I've always preferred New Year's Day.  I'm definitely a very goal-oriented person and I've always been drawn to the metaphorical idea of New Year's Resolutions.  This year, I'm setting some straightforward goals for myself that pertain to running...and then some that are non-running related.

Running/Fitness Goals:
1. Run 12 half marathons this year, as close to one per month as possible.  Remember, we talked about this previously?  I already know that August will be a tough month and I plan to use the Disneyland Half Marathon weekend since it takes place in August and September.  And given that I'll be doing the half as part of the Dumbo Double Dare Challenge, it seems like a reasonable trade, yes?

2. Get back in the pool.  For most of my youth, I was involved in competitive swimming and more seriously in high school.  For about 5 years, I ate, drank and breathed chlorinated life.  I haven't been terribly diligent about getting back in the pool, but this year I'd really like to take advantage of my YMCA indoor pool and capitalize on my love for being wet as a great cross-training workout.

3. Improve my race times.  I'd like to run a sub-2:10 half marathon, a sub-27min 5k and a sub-60min 10k.

Non-running goals:
1. Quit biting my nails.  Ugh, my worst habit.  Enough said.

2. Get better about reading again.  I love to read and enjoy a little decompression before bed.

3. Try out one new recipe each week.  I made that giant recipe binder for a reason...time to use it!

What are your goals or resolutions for the new year?

  1. My big running and walking goal for 2013 is 2013 miles. I'd be happy with 1000, but I figured why not go all out and shoot for the stars :)

The running goal that, to me, is more important right now... Is not getting swept at the Princess Half next month (My face: (O.O) I can't believe it's already next month!)

And for non-running goals... Graduating, getting accepted into a doctoral program, and buying a house.
I never said I dreamt small, huh? ;)

It's so nice to hear about other people's goals :) good luck!

  4. Swimming is on my 2013 list too! Well actually "Do a Triathlon" is on my list, but to do that I need to start swimming! I was a diver and a lifeguard for years and really do miss it, hopefully now that I'll be going back to school I'll have more time to get to a pool.

I love the 12 half marathons in 12 months...I may start looking at races in my area and see if that is something I could manage, I'd love to do that but need to watch my budget a bit (and save for those Disney races!).

    Good Luck!

    1. Thanks Danielle! I'm a little nervous about the cost too...most will have to be local races or places I can drive and stay with friends. If nothing else, it will be a fun adventure...not sure if I'll get there!

Good luck back in the pool...I know it will certainly be painful at first for me, but I REALLY want to get back into it. :)

  5. I would love to do 12 half marathons; however, they don't have that many near hear so I am settling for a mixed bag of races for 13 in 2013.
I bite my nails too. 2 years ago my goals was to always keep them painted, it has helped me bite them less.

    1. Abby, great idea to paint your nails to keep from biting them. I will have to try that one! Good luck with finding your races!

    1. Good luck Pam on completing those goals. It is easy starting the year out eating better after the holidays. My first marathon is next weekend and it will probably be my last, but maybe not!
