Nutrition Month: Vitamin Needs of Athletes

Continuing on our trend of highlighting nutrition resources as part of National Nutrition Month, we figured we would hit on vitamins.  We share mixed opinions on vitamins (Pam takes them daily, Christine takes them if they taste like candy and if she remembers...), but share a concern for getting enough of the vitamins and minerals the body needs to function.  There are many vitamins and minerals that are important for general well-being and some that are specifically important for runners.  Here is a quick and easy guide that we've developed to help you figure out what you need to keep you at peak running performance!

How do you get all the vitamins and minerals you need for staying healthy?

  1. Christine I like your way of thinking!! Hah!
I don't always remember to take them like I should, even though I carry around a pill box in my purse! Love the list! Thanks for sharing!!

    1. I actually keep a bottle of regular vitamins (not the candy kind) in my desk at work to try to take one at lunch.

  2. Ha! I literally laughed out loud when I read Christine's vitamin taking habit...sounds familiar (at least they finally started making adult gummy ones!).

    1. The way I see it...if I am more likely to take it because it's a vitamin in gummy bear clothing, then why not?! :)

    1. I know - totally guilty! I figure if it gets me to take one, it can't be all bad, right?! Yes, I'm rationalizing!!

  4. LOL Christine, I'm totally a gummy vitamin person. Which is fabulous, until you realize that the majority of them don't have iron (unless the One A Day ones do? Do you know? haha)

It's so great to see this list lay it all out, especially some of the vitamins that don't get as much attention as, say, Vitamin D and the B vitamins. We know they're out there, but sometimes it's just hard keeping track of what all they are and what they do...

Which reminds me, I need to go have my gummy vitamins (yes, I'm in my 20s... *cough cough*) and my biotin! Thanks for the reminder!

  5. I couldn't agree more. A lot of athletes really need these vitamins especially that they are doing a lot of physical activities. They need enough vitamin C, B12, A, and even vitamin d3 to keep them strong and healthy the entire game.
