Shamrock Marathon Weekend: The 411

Next Sunday, on March 17th (St. Patty's Day to be exact), I'll be embarking on my next half marathon, as part of the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon weekend.  I'm really excited about this race.  I have countless friends and colleagues who have run one of the Shamrock races.  I even caught a sneak peek of some of the setup this weekend when I took a nice long walk on the Boardwalk with a girlfriend.  The weekend repertoire includes the Shamrock Full Marathon, Anthem Half Marathon, TowneBank 8k, Leprechaun Dash and Operation Smile Final Mile.  Pretty full weekend, eh?

I've heard wonderful things about these races and was eager to register as the half marathon traditionally sells out very early.  I snagged a spot at one of their lower registration rates before the holidays.  I was very excited to see it featured in February's edition of Runner's World on the best half marathons.

Race confirmation and bib number: The J&A races have started to streamline their bib number identification process so there won't be a board to figure this out at the expo.  You can get your number here and on the 14th, you will receive a text with your number.  If you are unable to get to the expo, you can use their authorization form to allow a friend to pick up your packet for you.

Schedule of Events: Everything you need to know for race weekend

Expo Details: An entire website dedicated to the expo logistics.  The expo will be open Friday 12-9 and Saturday 10-5 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.  The site includes list of vendors, hours for packet pick-up and information on how Shamrock is going green.

Expo Speaker Schedule:  You can find me checking out Bart Yasso at 1:00 on Friday.

Runner Tracking: Available on Facebook, Twitter and via text message

Parking Map: It looks like all of the Oceanfront lots and meters will be available, but it will still be a challenge to find parking.  I plan to head down early!  And for drivers, they've made available all road closure information as well.

FAQs: All the information you couldn't find elsewhere!

As for me, I still have a few last minute logistical things to work out.  For one, I need to figure out my race day outfit once the weather forecast is a bit clearer.  I need to make sure I have cell numbers for all of my friends running the race to catch up at the finish line party.  And finally, I need to spend some time thinking through my race plan and making sure I'm ready for this race, mentally speaking.

Are you running Shamrock or another St. Pattys' day race?

  2. Looks fun! I wish there was a St Pat's themed half marathon here. I know of a 5K, but I'm feeling thrifty these days and I don't really want to spend $45 for a 5K. Good luck on your run!

    1. Thanks for the good wishes! We both agree that $45 is steep for a 5k.
