Product Review: JCPenney Workout Gear

My lovely friend Krissy posted a cute instagram photo the other night soliciting feedback on two workout tanks - solid pink or a pink print.  I really liked both, but the print was fun.  She happened to mention these were $10 at JCPenney and basically a ripoff of some higher end workout tanks.  So the next evening, I headed off to my local store to see what they had with my hopes high, but expectations in check (side note: the JCPenney at my local mall doesn't always have the A merchandise).

And boy was I excited!  There was an entire area in the store dedicated to workout wear and it wasn't a dark corner.  It was empty so I wandered around for quite a while picking out various tops and shorts.  I found some great stuff and tried a few things on before heading to the cash register with quite an armload - 2 tanks, 1 long sleeved half-zip, 1 pair shorts, and 1 pair compression shorts.  And I had a $10 coupon too!  Altogether my haul was a little over $50 which was pretty amazing!

And now the details of my duds...

Xersion singlet tank at $10 - I got deep purple and aqua.  I have tried these for runs and cross training and they're awesome!  Super soft and nice wicking.  Highly recommend.  I might get them in every color...

How cute is this print?!  Wish they had it in my size!

Nike running shorts on clearance at $8 (no longer available on the website) - how can you go wrong?  Love the color of these too...and they match my Asics!

Compression shorts are compression shorts...they're black and they were $17. They're comfy and get the job done.  I like the wider waistband...nothing squishing out the top or bottom! ;-)

And finally my favorite...this half zip (also no longer available on the website). The center is a pale violet and white stripe, panels and sleeves in solid violet with light green zippers.  And the pockets are huge!  I could pack a picnic in these.  This was on the clearance rack for $14!!!  While I'm happy it will likely not make an appearance now that spring is here, I'm looking forward to using it during my marathon training.

A few other notes:
- I found the sizing to be a bit inconsistent.  I got a size small in the pullover and the shorts...I'm generally a medium in most workout wear.
- There was lots of Nike stuff on the clearance rack...just not my size!
- Lots of other cute tanks that were in the $15-$20 range....I may be going back for some other styles!
-Overall very good quality fabrics compared to other discount workout wear (i.e., Target, Old Navy, etc.)

  1. Thanks for the info! I would have never thought JCP would have decent workout wear. I've went through countless tops from Target, etc. that just don't hold up in the wash.
I'll have to add this to my shopping list :)

  3. I had no clue that JC Penny's was doing workout gear now.. I heard they did some updating to their stores and pricing structure but I haven't had time to check it out. Definitely on my to-do list now! Thanks for the heads up!

  4. I stumbled upon my JCPenney workout section two months ago. DisneyGroom's grandmother had given me two $50 JCP gift cards. My jaw literally dropped at the selection. Bright fun colors, different weights of tech fabrics, cute styles, and reasonably priced. I have serious envy of a certain brand that rhymes with woowooyemen, but they don't make garments in my size. JCP had several wellmade knockoffs of that signature style. And TONS of Nike running gear on clearance. I've been back several times since finding this little oasis in the mall. There was so much inventory, that I wondered if anyone but me shops there at all. I didn't think to share it though, haha. If word gets out, it will be picked over like Target and Old Navy.

    1. Agree...it seems like most of us knew nothing about the selection, quality and quantity of merchandise available at JCPenney.

  5. That tank is a great color for you! I used to love, love, love JCP for work clothing. I could buy a lot of stuff and have a closet full of options. The last few years, though, they seem to have changed suppliers. The fit is just way off for me in most of their stuff. I like a lot of the Xersion stuff, but I don't know what it is...the chests and arms are just off kilter on me. I agree with you that they do have some amazing bargains in their clearance rack! It's always fun to find a treasure for a small price!

    1. Thanks, love the aqua color too! I hate it when a supplier is replaced and then the merchandise changes. Since I am new to the JCPenney workout clothing, so far so good.

  7. I tried the JCP line out recently as well! I found some great deals on long-sleeved half zip tops for only $4 on clearance at my local store! I just got the tanks last weekend and they are great! Soft and comfortable and doesn't weigh down with sweat either! I got a few tops too and they are great, very loose fitting and comfortable! I love all their bright colors! I guess the thing I like the most is that the clothes are a better quality than old navy and some things from target too!

  8. I have that half zip jacket and I LOVE it. being plus size it's one of the few places that carries a decent amount of workout clothes that are cute and don't make me look any larger than necessary. Love that they're slowly getting some attention. Can't beat their prices and frankly their quality (in my experience) is awesome. I have some from last year that I wore like crazy that while are too big, are still in excellent condition!

    1. Susan, Great to know the clothing holds up with use. Sometimes a good deal turns sour when the stuff falls apart after several washings!
