Tales from the Gym

If you follow me on my personal account on Twitter (@imperfectcak), you've probably noticed I often have some commentary on my gym trips.  Mostly this is about interesting outfits or strange behavior.  In these cases, I use the hashtag #gymetiquette.  With all of my training and my renewed focus on strength training, I've been a bit of a gym rat.  I figured I would share with you some of the best things I've seen/witnessed.

1. Pizza crust in trash can...no, not the trash can by the trainers station, the one in the weight room area.  What the heck?!

2. Wearing a sports bra on the outside of your top.  What support does that provide exactly?

3. Jorts.  One word: chafing. Ouch!

4. Skinny jeans.  How can you move in those things?

5. Sandals. Seriously?

6. Listening to music on iphone...boombox style.  Thanks for sharing with the rest of us, but I'd prefer my own workout mix, thankyouverymuch.

7. A man wearing very tight white/silver basketball shorts.  It wasn't pretty.

8. A family sitting Indian style in a circle in the free weight/stretching area (taking up the entire space)....not doing ANYTHING!

What grinds your gears at the gym?

  1. It drives me crazy when I am on the treadmill/ elliptical and someone is wearing too much perfume/ cologne...really?! It makes it hard to breath!!

  2. There was a woman at my old gym who used to shower and then stand with her foot up on the counter, using the hair dryer to... ahem... blow dry her ladybits. There are no words.

  5. Oh my gosh those are so funny! I do not get jeans when working out (usually men because they are so clueless-lol!) I had to google Jorts-so thanks for that :) I HATE when people (okay men, but I didn't want to sound sexist) grunt LOUDLY while doing weights. And people who sweat all over gym equipment and don't wipe it off.

  6. LOL this post was absolutely hilarious and awesome! My biggest pet peeve is either 1) When people wear a ton of perfume/cologne, or 2) When people don't wear deoderant - either way, it offends my nose!

    1. Lauren, we agree and the no deodorant issue is really bad!

  7. Haha, great post! Pizza crust in the trash can? Hmmm...

My #1 pet peeve: when people put the incline all the way up on the treadmill, lean back, and then HOLD ON. It looks like they're dangling from the treadmill, and because they never let go and actually, you know, USE THEIR LEGS to climb...I'm not seeing how there's ANY benefit whatsoever in looking that stupid!

  8. People who stare at themselves in the mirror. Lift a weight one time. Go back to staring at themselves and doing nothing else.

  9. WOW! You have caught some doozies!

Lately the ones who have been annoying me are:
People who are "using" the treadmill by standing on it and talking to their neighbor neither of whom have the belts on the treadmill moving

People who bring their infant/small toddler to lap swim and just stand in the way of people trying to actually lap swim and then chew you out when you splash their little one

    1. Well aren't treadmills a place to socialize rather than use for exercise? Some people are just plain rude, stupid or both!

  10. Your post made my day! The thing that irks me the most is the old, overweight lady who feels the need to wear only her sports bra and nothing else on top. We don't need to see all of that wrinkly jiggle!

  11. Hahaha, this had me laughing out loud. I don't have anything to add b/c my community doesn't have a gym...and never has. I've never experienced any of this...but there is talk we will hopefully be getting one soon! :) Great post!!
