Running Buddies are Awesome!

You may not know this about me but I tend to be a solitary runner.  I've never joined a running group and generally do 95% of my training runs solo.  Don't get me wrong - I love running with buddies, but I've always worried that pace, planned mileage and the like could get in the way of a successful group run.  Call me crazy.  While I don't have a training partner physically present, I have one mentally and emotionally present...the other half of the We Run Disney duo, my mama.

Last weekend, I really needed her for my long run.  I was struggling early and knew it would be tough. I knew I would need support so cried for help.

Luckily, she gave me a few welcome distractions to occupy my thoughts.  The day earlier, we bought our park tickets for our Disneyland trip later this summer so I was momentarily distracted.  Unfortunately, it didn't last long.  Thankfully she talked some sense into me and urged me to finish my planned mileage (13).

Even if only virtual, I'm forever grateful for my training pal.  We see each other through highs and lows of training and more often than not, we have similar mileage on our training plans, which is excellent.  I know that when the time comes to ramp up the mileage for the marathon and Dopey, I'll need her support even more.

Who's your training buddy?

  1. That's so awesome that you and Pam have each other! I am blessed to have several friends who run..although this summer I haven't ran much with them. But come fall training we will all be back together running again! It's great to have support!

  2. That's awesome!! Having a daughter, I love seeing the bond you two have and can't wait for my little running partner to be ready! :-) My husband and I are virtual running partners for now since we have to tag team run most weekends because of the kids. When I say "I can't", he just tells me to not think about it and just get it done...and it usually works! We tend to know what support the other needs and it works well. When both kids start school full time next month :-( we are going to start training together on his work from home day of the week. I am both excited and nervous for this to start! But having mental support and motivation from someone who understands is so needed for runners!

    1. Thanks Carla. It has been so great to do this together. I can imagine it's tough to find running time with small children...hopefully you'll enjoy running with your hubby. :)

    2. I'm excited.... we ran together before kids and with the kids in stroller/ double stroller until they got a little bigger (heavier!!). He is a much faster/ stronger runner than I am which intimidates me. But he has no problem pacing me and pushing me when needed to that will be great! I have really been working on speed work and am hoping to surprise him with being faster than before! We are running Dumbo, ToT, Wine and Dine, Dopey and Princess together...can't wait!! When we run Disney, we enjoy experiencing it together. We are also running a few local races and I want to run separate so that he can keep push himself and keep his corral A status! But I do love that he is my personal pacer! And a bonus to it all is that our kids want to run and walk with us which is fun!

  3. Love that you guys have this that you do together - the blog and running - and are able to support each other, even if not in person. I've always been a solo runner too, but recently my husband's been joining me for a couple of miles a week, even if it's just for the first 2-3 miles of a run it's nice to have the company!

  4. They are! My buddy and I have been off and on since she was diagnosed with PF and can't run as fast or at all sometimes with me. But she's been on the bike with me running and can run parts of my longer mileage runs. Accountability and good catchup time makes for a good running buddy :)

    1. It is nice just to have someone next to you at times. Mom rode her bike with me once when I needed a long run.

    1. The rough days are when you need it most...and it's nice to have people who understand your running style/pace to celebrate achievements on the good days!

  6. I couldn't help but smile as I read the texts between the two of you! A lot of the encouragement is very similar to what my husband tells me. Often we complete our long runs together, and I feel guilty since he's been running much longer than I have, and runs much faster than I do. His sacrifice to run at my pace is a true sign of not only how much he loves me but how supportive and encouraging he is of my running goals.

  8. You guys are so cute! I often type messages about wanting to quit to my hubby. But once I get my whining out, I almost always finish what I started. See you in Disneyland!

  9. I love that you two motivate eachother. You make an awesome team. My mom is my running partner too. We are currently training for the Rock n Roll Half in VA Beach( which we are both really nervous about running in that heat) and of Course the Disney Princess Half!

  11. My fiance is my running buddy. The Disneyland half will be his first half marathon and probably longest distance ever!!! (We have only gotten up to 9 miles training).
I don't know where you find it in you to push through a hot run. I'm from CA and in Louisianna currently for work and it's crazy hot and HUMID!!! Ugh... I made it through 7 miles of a planned 11.....
