Training Tuesday: Another Injury Time Out!

Last week I was hard at work getting in my miles, cross training workouts and exercise classes.  However, everything came to a screeching halt on Thursday when fifteen minutes after TRX class started, I heard/felt something in my right quad.  It was an eerie sensation, where you know something has happened inside your body, but no one around could hear it except you.  I immediately excused myself from class and Rachel, my instructor told me to go home and rest, ice elevate the injured leg and take Ibuprofen.  I followed her directions and decided that I would be proactive and call my doctor first thing Friday morning for an appointment.  With the Dumbo Challenge three weeks away, I needed to heal quickly!

Lulu kept me company while I iced my leg!

Friday morning I was unable to make a doctor appointment so I went instead to Urgent Care where I saw a Nurse Practitioner who diagnosed my quad strain.  She thought PT would help so wrote my prescription and I was on my way after just under an hour!  Stopping at the Pt office on the way home was really helpful because Jude checked out how I was walking and assured me that it was not a major problem. He could see me Monday at 1 pm and I was eager to get the therapy started, especially since my weekend was going to be more resting, icing and elevating!  I did manage to get in a good swim over the weekend since I only used my arms and good leg to push off the walls! It felt great to do some exercise and the pool is easy on your body when you have a running related injury!

My official photographer Tom was on lifeguard duty too!

Monday could not come soon enough and I was in the office waiting for my appointment with many minutes to spare.  Jude checked everything out and said my left quad had very strong muscle tone, which meant my right leg was not nearly as injured as he first thought.  My healing has gone way better than expected and he gave me a full treatment including heating, ultrasound, kneading (that was really painful) and icing.  I am due back tomorrow for round two and hopefully I will be lacing up my running shoes later this week. Have you dealt with an injury lately?  How did you handle the lack of exercise?

  1. Good news! Hope to hear that you're all clear to lace up this weekend.
I was dealing with ITBS earlier this summer and I switched it up with lots of yoga, elliptical and stationary biking. I missed running but eventually after giving my knee proper rest I was good to go!
I need to get into swimming.... :)

    1. Thanks Karen. I am so eager to get to Yoga this afternoon. It is hard being still when you are used to daily activity!

  2. Glad to hear your injury is not as serious as originally thought! I've been very fortunate (knock on wood!) to have not dealt with any injuries since I've started running, but I did have a pretty serious back injury in high school. Unfortunately my doctors were not very proactive and my "treatment" was muscle relaxers (which made me totally loopy) and DO NOTHING. I dealt with back pain for YEARS until I finally decided on my own I needed to just start being active again and see what happened - luckily it worked and my back pain is minimal now!

Hearing feedback about how your PT has helped really makes me anxious to get into the field - only 4 years of school left, yikes!

    1. How sad that my two injuries since I started running are due to other activities...tennis the first time and TRX class this time. Guess I need to concentrate on golf, the gym and running! Yes, PT is amazing, and I have the best of the best in Wilmington!

    1. I'm sure I will be very nervous my first time back, but today my PT guy told me I would just go one mile for my first outing and at a jog pace.

  7. Hang in there Pam....your going to be good to go by Race Weekend. So glad you started right away with PT...
and I'm so happy to hear that it isn't as injured as you thought.

I had knee pain/ IT band probs/and quad pain all in my left side about two months ago....rolling...icing...rolling...and elliptical helped get me through....now I make sure to keep my intervals in place and not just think I can just run ...although I want to....the walk breaks have helped keep my IT band calm...and my knee and quad are back to normal....

Disneyland weekend is coming up fast!

  10. Hang in there! I am sorry to hear of your set back but at least it has only been a week or two! I have been battling injury since March 18th and have missed 3 races in that time (as well as selling my MCM bib) and countless weeks of exercise. sometimes i was limited to nothing and other times i was limited to low impact stuff. i ended up having surgery and am now 4 weeks into recovery and was finally able to hit the gym yesterday in normal shoes! I dealt with injury through swimming, arm, back and core strengthening that often did not include my feet as my left foot was the injury. i wish you luck in D3 and look forward to hearing your full report and hopefully seeing/meeting you and your daughter either in dc in oct or at WDW in january! i look forward to more exciting installments!

  11. Hope you're back up and at it soon Pam!

I was dealing with a sciatica flare up last week and took the whole week off. Luckily I had my birthday to distract me some, but it stinks not being able to run!! This was the first time I've had to take so many days off and it was pretty much as bad as I imagined it would be, haha.

    1. Oh Kristina, sciatica is not fun. I had a piraformis muscle problem last year that the doctor thought might be sciatica but that was not the case. Lots of rolling helped me alot. Good luck and belated Happy Birthday!

  12. Sorry you're injured! I just came back from a hip injury. It's so frustrating. I did lots of swimming and biking until I could ease back into running gradually. Hopefully you'll be back in shape in time for Disneyland!
