It's Time to Start Dopey Training!

With the Dumbo Double Dare Challenge in our rear view mirror, it is time to start concentrating on the biggest weekend of races we will ever attempt.  The Dopey Challenge is a humdinger and after reading through Jeff Galloway's training plan on my flight home from Boston yesterday, I have my calendar ready to get started.

I'm the nerd who likes to write on the calendar and keep track of all my training for a specific race.  So, I make a paper copy of the training plan!  Jeff's plans are easy to follow and his plan for the Goofy Challenge that I followed last year worked out beautifully.  so, I hope to find this works just as well and I finish in an upright position!

Since I kept last week pretty easy, I am altering this week's plan by including a long run on Saturday.  This plan has a mileage increase every other week, with back to back runs starting in two weeks.  After my sister agreed to run a race with me next month in the Boston area, the week of October 15th will also be altered slightly.  During my Goofy training sticking to the schedule was important, but making sure to stay healthy is equally so.  Sadly I returned from Boston with a bad cold and cough (hello airline travel) so I am hoping to keep my run schedule intact for the rest of the week.

Do you train during illness?  How is your Dopey training going?

  1. Bummer about your cold-have you ever tried taking Airborne when you fly? I usually do just because there is ALWAYS someone on a flight that is coughing up a lung :) Good luck to both of you on your Dopey training! I can't imagine running that much in 4 days. Everyone deserves a huge medal for that feat!

    1. Monica, I used to take Airborne but after the FDA came out with their report that it really did nothing, I kept with my usual Vitamin C and precautionary measures with antibacterial wipes etc.

  2. I hope you get well soon! My cure for any cough is tea w honey.
I dislike airline travel because of all the germs! I am that lady who wipes down her tray table with antibacterial wipes.
I still train when I'm sick depending on my symptoms. If it's anything from my chest up I am really careful and listen to my body.
Jeff Galloway plans are great, he makes running all those miles seem manageable (somehow!) :P

    1. Thanks Karen. I also drink plenty of tea with honey. Actually, I am super careful when I travel, but sometimes the recirculated air on an airplane can get you. It may be the flu, I have been feeling achy as well as cough and cold. Boo

  3. Sorry to hear that you're sick. :( Depending on how I feel dictates whether or not I train, but if I do train it'll be for a reduced time and/or distance. I never want to push my body too much when my immune system isn't 100%. Since I'm running the 10K and half in January, I'm following a modified version of Dumbo. My husband is doing Dopey, and is also following a modified version of Galloway's training plan. So far, it seems to be working out well for both of us!

    1. The Dumbo Training plan should work out great for your January races. I think I may add a bit more mileage to Jeff's plan for Dopey, but at the moment I am just sitting on the sofa!

    1. Kat I think you are right and considering how I feel today, I am still in PJ's and barely left the bed. Stinks but hopefully with lots of rest I will be up for a weekend run!

  5. Oh yuck, getting sick while training stinks!!! If it's been 72 hours or less, try some zinc lozenges to shorten the duration and lessen the symptoms :) Feel better soon!!!

Oh, and I wanted let you know that I nominated you ladies for The Liebster Award! Head over to my blog (www.thesmithsummary.com) to read all about it and "accept" it if you're interested :)

    1. Kristen, I am taking the zinc lozenges, but I have been hit like a ton of bricks. It seems more flu than cold although no temperature. PJ time has been perfect today!

    1. The Dopey plan is really not that bad. It just takes alot of time and luckily I have that. However, I need to feel better first!
