Thanksgiving Traditions

Our family likes to celebrate our holidays in much the same fashion year after year.  A Thanksgiving day turkey trot was something we enjoyed the last three years during our trips to Virginia to visit with Christine. This year, we are taking a break from racing, but will still get in a few miles before we start the food preparations for our afternoon feast.  Sitting around watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade is one of our favorite things to do while eating breakfast. We also peruse the sale ads from the newspaper in preparation for our Black Friday shopping adventure!

For many years, we have been doing the same activity while waiting for the turkey to roast!  Believe it or not, it is competitive, especially deciding who gets to put Pooky (Garfield's stuffed bear), together and I am calling dibs right now!

I make this mix every year between October and January.  Tom likes to call it football food, but my version of Chex Party Mix has been a staple for years during our Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
Ready for snacking!
As for our meal, we have the usual favorites like everyone: turkey, stuffing, gravy, vegetables and of course a can of this goodness. Cranberry sauce always taste better with those ridges formed by the can!

One year, Christine made some very fancy cranberry sauce, and sadly it was neglected for the canned variety.  Now we just stockpile the cans and save time in preparation! Of course we indulge in some sweet dessert and this year it will be something pumpkin flavored that Christine is baking from scratch.  We will also have plenty of chocolates for munching too!

Lastly, we take time to be thankful for all of our blessings.  Do you have special Thanksgiving traditions?

  1. LOVE cranberry sauce!
We don't have any Thanksgiving traditions but we do have lots of Christmas traditions. This year my fiancee and I are cooking (small meal, only 4 people) but we have been thinking of traditions we would like to establish for when our family grows someday :)

  5. Since being married Thanksgiving has always been spent with my husband's side of the family and they have no real traditions I have noticed! I had to laugh when you said Christine made her own cranberry stuff one year because I wonder if it was the same thing I made one time. It was called cranberry relish and it was quite good. It was cranberries grinded up and some orange peel in it ( that's all I remember, but it was good). Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

  6. I just want to point out that the Garfield Thanksgiving special is totally the best one. "A cuppa butter. A cuppa brown sugar. And some MARSH-MALLAHS."
