Race Recap: Jingle Bell 5k

On Saturday, we ran our last race of 2013 at the Wrightsville Jingle Bell 5k.  This is a really fun race and has grown tremendously since it first started in 2009. There were 551 finishers in 2013 as opposed to 133 the first year. While this is a chip timed race and many serious runners participate, there is tremendous fun involved with Christmas music and decorations at the start/finish line. Additionally,  many runners race in elaborate holiday costumes! Tom took our photo just before we left the house!

First time to run in my new Without Limits shirt!

My favorite part of this year's race was having my running buddy with me! We arrived really early for race registration and found out that shirts were not available. We did get our bibs and then spent a few minutes looking at the starting line which was decorated with Christmas wreaths and stockings.  This race has a wonderful holiday atmosphere, especially with all the runners in costume.  At this point, we took a few quick photos with our bibs and then went back to the car to adjust our clothing layers!

All set to race! Sorry, I made Christine blurry in this one!
We decided to do a mile warm up and use the bathroom nearby and then wait in the car. It was a cold and  damp morning, so we did not want to waste energy trying to stay warm standing outside for too long! Soon it was time for the countdown to the start.  Not having paid close attention, we were probably behind 150-200 runners. This proved to be a bit tricky at the beginning as we both did alot of passing. The race itself is at Wrightsville Beach and the scenery is lovely as you cross over the bridge towards the beach and then back to the museum.  Christine was quickly out of my sight and with my Garmin not working (probably operator error) I just tried to run fast and enjoy my music. I did see several runners from Without Limits, my running group and even ran with Erin for a little while. Finally arriving at the finish line, I was disappointed to see my time on the results board.  However, what I did not realize was it was the clock time.  My chip time was a 6 second PR!  Christine also PR'd this race and ran a 22:52! To say we were a bit excited is an understatement. We hung around for the awards and enjoyed seeing all the costumes.  Here are some of our favorites!

Santa with tiny Santa, shepherd and blue Elvis (he won a prize)

The Grinch Group ( won for group costume)

Loved this living nativity! Mary and baby won for stroller divisiion!

It's always fun to get on the podium! (Mrs. Claus did not run in that outfit!)

After finishing the morning with another loop of the course to complete our 7 miles for Dopey Challenge training we made a stop at Chick Fil A and headed back home.  One of these delicious chocolate chip peppermint shakes is the perfect was to celebrate a PR!

    1. Sarah, I can't imagine how long it took to make some of those costumes. However, they were well appreciated by the runners and spectators.

    1. Thanks Jennifer, we did not plan to run this race, and that is the reason there were no race shirts left. Next time I will definitely register in advance!

  6. Amazing PRs for you both. How wonderful.
I keep seeing stuff about these Chick-Fil-A shakes so I drove by my local store and it wasn't on the menu. Is it a special holiday thing I can ask for and they will know about?

    1. Abby, I am not sure they list them on their menu, but they always have them at Chick fil A in late November, through December. These shakes are very tasty if you are a fan of chocolate and peppermint!
