Tink Half is moving in 2015: My thoughts

The interwebs were a buzz the last few days with an impending announcement from runDisney.  On Monday morning, they posted a video with a teaser that included Tink but few other details.  Speculation was rampant about the announcement - a new race being added to the runDisney schedule, a Tink challenge (similar to glass slipper), the Tink 10k course revealed, more entries being added and the list goes on and on.  To be honest, I didn't pay too much attention to the hubbub but my interest was certainly piqued.

And I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed by the announcement...not necessarily by the news that the race weekend is moving to Mother's Day weekend in 2015, but it was a bit of a letdown after all of the hype.

So now for my "analysis"...
- The move from January to May will no longer leave the Tink Half weekend in Marathon weekend's shadow, from a calendar vantage point.
- Especially for those ladies looking to obtain the pink Coast to Coast medal by completing the Princess Half and Tink Half, this creates a bit of a buffer for both time and money.
- Many Moms seem to be very disappointed about the move to Mother's Day weekend, citing their dedication to a family-oriented weekend, where this female-oriented race weekend was traditionally an opportunity for a girls trip.
- For those that couldn't swing a winter race weekend, this provides a new "season" for a runDisney half marathon weekend.
- It appears to compete with Expedition Everest, given that they'll both be in May on back-to-back weekends.  We know that runDisney has done back-to-back events on opposing coasts so it will be interesting to see if EE hangs around on the runDisney schedule.
- There are other large California events on neighboring weekends or the same weekend - the OC half marathon, Diva's half in San Francisco, and others.
- There hasn't been any information released about those who deferred the 2014 races and what the implications/options might be given the date change for 2015.
- A shift from January to May definitely will have implications for race-day weather...it will probably be warmer!

My counterpart has informed me that she might like a Mother's Day weekend in Anaheim in 2015...how about you?

  1. Great points that you made! For me (personally) the weather here is getting warmer and nicer in May and there are a lot of races locally (or within driving distance) that I would like to particiapte in. Part of the fun of Tink in February must have been going to sunny CA while the East Coast was freezing . I really wanted to participate in Tink next year but with the move I don't think I can swing it. Mother' s Day Weekend also seems like it could be fun (for the running duo's!) but I know I'd like to be close to my mom and grandmother who don't travel on Mother's Day (typically) so we can all be together.
It's an interesting move...perhaps they have something else up their sleeve for Disney between February-May? Either way it will be exciting :)

    1. I agree Karen. The cold/winter we are trying to get away from is gone by May. I think out of town runners will do this once to check it off their list.

  2. The date change might work for me! I'll have to start keeping up with updates!

    1. If you do a Disney race let me know Jill. Would love to meet you since I love your blog!

  3. I was never really tempted to do the Tinkerbell 1/2 because I'm not big on women's races, but there are lots of local races in May that I would much rather do--Brooklyn 1/2, Superhero 1/2, the Nike Women's 1/2 at the end of April... In every possible way, they're all cheaper. I have to agree with the moms on this one though--it seems like a poor choice given how the day is typically celebrated.

Plus, I also found the announcement kind of a letdown.

    1. The announcement was a letdown because everyone thought there would be a new race. However, this time frame would work for us, but being east coasters, it might be only once!

  4. I don't really have an opinion of the move to Mother's Day weekend, but I am sorely disappointed in the actual news vs the hype that was created. I was expecting a new race announcement or something else equally as exciting!

    1. Way too much hype for a date change IMO!

  5. It doesn't really affect me much...because I live in the south and getting to California would be tough for me. But May is pretty hot here in the south...not sure what it's like in CA but I wouldn't want to race in May here.

    1. I think it will be pretty hot in CA in May Mindy. We will do this race once, and hopefully in 2015.

  6. I was hoping for some more exciting news. In my opinion, it was a let down. I liked that Tink was in January and the move to Mother's Day weekend will make it less likely that I will attend. Ah well, my bank account will thank me!

    1. Agree Lisa. Many women will pass on this race because it is Mother's Day weekend.

  7. The move to May leaves Tink competing with the OC Marathon, but the way it is now in January, it competes with the Surf City marathon and half. Surf City tends to be a local favorite here in Orange County, so I know quite a few runners who are happy with the date change allowing them to do both races. Personally, I'm glad for the change to a warmer time of year!

    1. Jennifer, I just hope it won't be too warm to run a half marathon!

  8. I think the race will still sell out, but I don't think rD thought this through. If they are going to add a new race to that weekend, why not make both announcements at the same time?

    1. Lesley, we both agree. It may sell out, but I think they will have trouble getting alot of repeat runners if they stick to Mother's Day weekend.

  9. I like the change. I thought there were too many races in the Jan-Feb time slot. I like how they are spreading it out a bit. I think it would make a great mothers day gift too!

  11. I honestly can't decide how I feel about this change :) First of all, the announcement was not worth all the hype. I think moving it is smart since Tink and Marathon Weekend were so close together. However, on Mother's Day weekend? Not so sure. I have a feeling something bigger is brewing though...

  12. You know I'm not thrilled! But if running Tink is important to me (and it is) then I'll figure something out. I preferred the January date because I was able to ask for this as my Christmas present! ;) But now I just have to ask for it as a Mother's Day gift and make the details work out!

  13. I had always wanted to do the Tinkerbell Half and with it typically being MLK weekend, it was nice already having a day off from work (and for my teacher husband too). But I think my mother would kill me if I missed mother's day to fly across the country to do this. But I have always wanted an excuse to be at Disney around my birthday. I don't know...I'm torn. :/

  14. Unfortunately my daughter (and son, but keeping with the girls weekend theme) is way too young to run and my mom has no interest what-so-ever, plus too crowded/expensive to have them deal with that to watch me at the finish line. Very bummed bc these were "my" time events, not family events (reiterating the crowds, schedule, expense). So I guess TInk 2014 will be my one and done. Bummed but I am not dealing with a Disney race on a family holiday.
