Race Recap: WDW Family Fun Run 5k

On Thursday morning, at 4:00am, we got up to start our Dopey Challenge races at the Disney Family Fun Run 5k. This was the only day that we had planned new costumes and we were excited to run and take lots of character photos.

Tigger likes to bounce!
We made plans to stop for every character stop as we did in our prior two 5k races at Disney, the Royal Family 5k and the Jingle Jungle 5k.  After seeing some of our friends before the race, we made our way to corral B and got ready for the fireworks and the countdown to the start.

Ready to run!
The first mile or so is outside of a park, so we ran at a pretty brisk pace for a while to get out of the crowds.  Soon enough, we were heading into Epcot and the first character stop (Flick, from a Bug's Life) had a long line.  We passed that one and when we arrived in Norway minutes later,  we saw Daisy dressed in a cute Norwegian inspired costume.  Queuing up with about fifteen other runners, it took about 5 minutes to get our picture taken.
Love seeing unique characters on the course!
We found the course busier after our stop,  but still manageable. As we ran further through World Showcase,  I spied Dopey and an extremely long line.  We made the quick decision to wait for a photo behind approximately 50 runners.  As our Garmin watches were ticking away, all of a sudden we realized that we could be in jeopardy by not finishing within the 16 minute per mile pace.  After about a 12-15 minute wait, we jumped out of the line and started running again.  The course was packed at this point and we had to run around tons of walkers.  We figured we probably wouldn't hit any other characters due to the long lines - we saw Remy on the course in France and kept going, but we did pause for a moment with Spaceship Earth.
Definitely one of my favorite photos from our trip
Finishing a few minutes later in a time of just over 44 minutes, we had cut it really close.  (Note that while the 16 minute per mile pace requirement was cited in all runDisney literature, there appears to have been no enforcement of it with the exception of the traditional sweeping in the longer events.)  After receiving our cute Pluto medals, we went for a finish line photo taken with Chip and Dale.

Catching up with Megan after the race
Compared to other Disney 5k events, we found this event to be very crowded and were surprised there were not more character stops along the course.  In summary, we found this race to be a little disappointing.  Most of all, we were sad we missed our chance for a photo with Dopey.  But all in all, we had fun bouncing around EPCOT in our costumes and seeing friends along the course.

  3. I LOVE your costumes! So creative and cute! I thought there should have been more character stops along the marathon course as well. It is January so perhaps they are all taking a vacay? ;p

  4. You both had such cute costumes! I expected to see more characters throughout the entire weekend, especially during the 10k. I was shocked that there was only one character stop during that long 3.5 mile stretch before entering Epcot.

    1. Yes, totally agree Kathryn! We were definitely disappointed in volume of characters on the 5k and 10k.

  7. Ok, I LOVE Pam's "bouncing" picture, that is too funny! I know we discussed it already but I was totally disappointed with the 5k also, it seriously lacked characters and entertainment as far as I was concerned.

  8. LOVE your costumes! I have the same feelings on the 5K, and I'm glad they didn't enforce the 16-minute/mile rule for the 5K because I kind of forgot about it and stood in that ridiculous line for Dopey! I figured if I didn't see sweepers then I'd be okay, but it should have been made a little more clear for anyone who did want to stand in line for any of the minimal character photo opps.

    1. Thanks Jennifer! I'm glad you got a Dopey picture - we were so bummed that we didn't end up getting one! Oh well.

  9. One again such cute costumes! Did this race start earlier than the other 5K's (Royal Family)? I was just wondering because it seems awfully dark. I can remember running it last year ( and I was in corral B as well) and it was daylight by the time we got to world showcase. I worry about these silly little things!

    1. It looks like this race starts at the same time as the Royal Family 5k this year (6:15). I can only assume it will be lighter by the time late Feb rolls around. I remember it being a lot lighter at last year's Royal Family 5k too!

  11. I love the costumes you guys are wearing! Boy, that is a little disappointing on the lack of characters. I remember five from last year - Chip & Dale, Norwegian Daisy, Goofy, Pluto and Donald Duck. And I thought that was a little slim compared to previous years!

  12. I am sorry you didn't get your photo with Dopey :0( Hopefully Disney learns from their mistakes and puts more photo options along the course in the future. Great job though, and I love the costumes!

  15. Hi Ladies! I totally agree about the 5k - I was very disappointed with the race. Last year it was my favorite race. I really, really enjoyed the 20 character stops for the marathon. It was nice meeting you and hope to see you next year for a couple of races...no more Dopey for me. ;) That 2:30am stuff was a bit much for me. :)

  16. Oh my goodness, Pam's bouncing picture is AWESOME! I will admit - I was expecting more characters too! I felt bad since it was Brent's first Disney race - but he didn't seem to care :)
