America's cup challenge....cruise edition!

After the Dopey Challenge, Tom met me in Miami for a cruise vacation to the Caribbean.  We were excited to be escaping the cold weather that had hit North Carolina after the New Year. Little did we know it would continue for another month, and who knows when it will be over!

Excited about our excursion
We had options of various excursions at our port stops, but the one we were most looking forward to was the stop in St. Maarten.  We had signed up for the yacht racing excursion that was rated one of the top excursions in the Caribbean. With long sleeves and lots of sunscreen, we met our group on the pier for our walk to the boat.

After a briefing and team selection, we were taken out to one of three boats that would be competing in the regatta.  Our boat was the original Stars and Stripes yacht that Dennis Connor sailed to victory in the America's Cup Challenge in 1987. Neither Tom or I had sailed in years, but we both were given crew positions.  He was a primary grinder and I was at the stern of the ship working the ropes on the starboard side.

After a twenty minute review of our jobs, it was time for the regatta to begin.  The course was 3 times around the three buoys and as soon as the horn went off we crossed the starting line. Our boat traded places with the other two boats, during the race at least once or twice.  By the time we were rounding the last buoy, we were neck and neck with Canada One.  With just yards to the finish line, our skipper got our boat past Canada One for the victory! After some big cheers, we moored the boat and it was time to return to the shore.

We celebrated our little victory that night by sharing champagne and a lovely dinner with three other couples who had been our teammates that morning. It was a fantastic way to finish our cruise port stops before returning to Miami.

Have you ever been on a cruise?

  2. Oh how fun! I've been on 3 cruises, 2 of which were Disney cruises (of course)! My husband and I went on the Disney Cruise for our honeymoon! Disney spoils you on their cruises (just like with everything). My non Disney cruise just didn't compare at all.

    1. It was fantastic Lauren. If you choose a Caribbean cruise, be sure to look for this excursion. Another passenger told me it is offered at another Caribbean port too.

    1. Kristen, I always thought cruising was for old sedentary people who like to eat. That could not be further from the truth!

  7. There is absolutely no excuse for the fact that I've lived in Florida for 40 years and still haven't been on a cruise. Not even a $250 two night trip. It's so cheap to go from here since there's no airfare which also gives us the flexibility to grab a last minute deal... Definitely on my "to do" list soon!
