runDisney relay races....I miss them

Back in January of 2012, runDisney had an inaugural race during the marathon weekend.  It was called the Chip and Dale Marathon relay and I was fortunate to participate in the race.  When I first heard about the relay I could not wait to register but first I needed a running partner.  At the time, Christine was still not back to running and one of my neighbors here in North Carolina had a daughter who ran, and who lives in Florida. Best of all, Allyson was willing to team up with me for this special race.  We got registered and before long it was marathon weekend and we were ready to run.

Loved the bibs with my favorite chipmunks!
The race itself was good, but the logistics for making it happen are the most likely reason that the race was discontinued.  The transition point at the Transportation and Ticket Center was a bit confusing and relay runner number 2 had to wait a very long time for their turn to run.  In fact, we were given a four page booklet of Final Race Instructions at bib pickup that had all the relay runners arriving at the race start at 4:00AM! Clearly this meant runner number 2 would be sitting around for a long time and perhaps that is why we were all given a little sit pad with our booklet!
Instructions and our little pouch with pad for waiting!
Allyson and I both had fun participating in this event and I do wish runDisney would figure out a way to bring it back.  The medal is one of my very favorites, with Chip handing an acorn to Dale for the relay transfer! Our race shirts had a great design and so did the medals!

My favorite runDisney shirt of the unisex styles.
Although neither of us ran it, there was also a relay for the Wine and Dine half marathon in 2010 and 2011. This seems like such a nice option, particularly for those who want to be participate in a longer race without having to do all the distance.  The camaraderie associated with relays also makes them really fun. Waiting for your partner to finish, and cheering them on is so different than just racing solo.

Perhaps runDisney will consider returning these races to the calendar sometime in the future and if they do, I know two girls who are very eager to register.

  1. That's so cool! I've never even heard of this. I think a relay would be awesome but it sounds like they would need to work on the logistics!

    1. We would sign up in a heartbeat, especially if they were to bring back the Chip and Dale race! I hope runDisney figures this one out!

  2. The relays sounded like a lot of fun, I'm sad they are gone! It does stink that the second runner had to wait at the TTC that long! Super cute medal and shirt!!

    1. Agree Karen, the medal is one of my favorites and Christine has medal envy! LOL. We were staying at the Poly, so Allyson figured out a way to walk over so she did not wait a ridiculously long time.

  3. YES! I've never done a runDisney relay before, and my husband and I were planning on doing the Wine and Dine one in '12 -- and racing my bro and sis-in-law-- and then it never happened. We were so bummed. I can see how it'd be difficult from a logistics standpoint though. Still, it's Disney so you'd think they'd be able to figure out a way to make that happen!

I'm incredibly jealous of your Chip and Dale medal! They're my 2 favorites. I was trying to figure out why I didn't run that race and then I remembered I had a 6 week old haha.

    1. Jen, this relay was really fun, and I am sure it would be feasible to bring it back. However, I am not sure that runDisney will bother since they seem to be selling out whatever races they offer in record time.

  4. I would love to do a relay as well and sad that they eliminated them. Didn't they have a relay for one of the TOT races years ago too? I remember a gal from one of my Disneybride groups had done it. That was the first Disney race recap i've ever read! Maybe with a lot of social media "peer pressure" disney will find a way to bring those races back!

    1. I did not know about the TOT relay Meranda. That would be fun too, especially since that race weekend is usually so hot that splitting the distance would be nice.

  5. I did the Wine and Dine relay in 2011. It was fun, and I consider it the reason i'm addicted to running now!! I do wish they'd bring back the relays, they were a lot of fun!

    1. That's great Jennifer. I would love to see the relay medal for Wine and Dine. Maybe if they get enough requests, they would consider bringing back the relays.

  7. The relay sounds like a great idea that Disney should consider bringing back. I'm sure the logistics are a nightmare, but there are other relays out there (like Rock 'n' Roll), so I'm sure the kinks could be worked out.

    1. Christine and I ran the rock n roll relay in Virginia Beach and it was really fun. That race weekend is typically very hot, so it was nice to share the distance!

  8. I'm surprised they just cancelled the relay without working out the logistics. It's WDW, all the races are on Disney property. I really loved the idea of a relay and getting to run a different route.

    1. Lesley, it was a surprise to me too. However, the long wait for runner 2 was definitely an issue and the DJ telling runners to go without their relay partner finishing the first leg was also a problem!

  9. I ran this relay as well- I was the 2nd runner, and I agree, the logistics were a mess. If they could figure out how to make them work, I'd love it if they brought them back. Although, I think the addition of the 10k races is why they won't.

    1. Abby, you may be correct....the 10k gives runners a shorter distance, and it gives runDisney more money in their pockets. I would love to see relays return though.

  10. I think the relay would be fun, but feel they would have to do it on a separate day with better organization and not so much waiting.

    1. a race director familiar with relays could handle this easily. However, runDisney may be happy adding 10k's and other races instead.

  11. Question: I made have missed some posts, but why did Christine stop running?

    1. Sarah, Christine had a very unfortunate experience at her first Princess Half marathon in 2011. Here is a link to a post so you can understand the details: http://www.werundisney.com/2013/02/i-believe-in-me.html It would take me to long to write it all in comments....sorry.

  12. That Chip & Dale medal and shirt are adorable! I love this idea of doing a relay race... I hope they consider bringing one back, though I definitely understand that the planning logistics would be really difficult.

  15. Chip and Dale was my first half and my first Disney race! My friend needed a partner. I was not a runner but wanted to go to Disney. So I started running and haven't stopped. Love my medal and my shirt.

  16. I ran my first relay last year and it was fun. I would love to try a disney one. I liked that Chip and Dale medal too, so cute. Maybe they will bring one back some day, especially with how Run Disney is so popular now. They can get more $$! ;)
