Foot Health Awareness Month

Did you know April is Foot Health Awareness Month?  As runners, we are conscious of how we treat our feet on a daily basis.  We have sung the praises of our favorite running socks and shoes...thank you Brooks, New Balance, and Thorlos.  What we have not done is discuss how to treat your feet.

Since I do not work outside of the home, it is very easy for me to wear comfortable shoes, sandals or sneakers daily.  I do not have to dress up, nor do I really care much about footwear. Instead, I wear flats 99% of the year.  My few pairs of heels might come out of the closet for a special holiday party or wedding.

Besides wearing comfortable shoes, others things I do to keep my feet happy include using foot lotions and scrubs on a regular basis. Having pedicures is something many runners avoid and I freely admit that I sometimes polish my own nails due to the embarrassment of "runner feet."  Keeping a Shea butter foot cream on hand is helpful for those tootsies. An Epsom salts bath will help not only your body but your feet too.  My favorite one includes spearmint which smells extra nice!
Some of my favorites!
Now, best of all, our friends at Thorlo socks are offering a wonderful giveaway!  You can find all the details here. Besides the giveaway, they also have the option of trying a pair of their socks for the shipping cost only. Hurry on over and enter in the giveaway and treat your feet to a new pair of socks!

Disclaimer: We received no compensation for this post.  We just really love Thorlos and would love for one of our buddies (or us) to win a bunch of them!

  1. My feet are in need of some desperate TLC (hmm...TMI?). Before I put on sandals they are going to have their own spa day next week :p
I only have one pair of Thorlos socks and they are amazing! I got them as a Christmas present this year. A great pair of socks really makes a difference when you are running all of those miles!

    1. I am addicted to Thorlo Experias and so is Christine.....it's funny how certain things like the right shoes and socks make a run so much happier! Enjoy your spa day! I was ready to go for a spring pedicure, but had to cancel due to my dog bite. It will be months before I can have a real pedicure....sad face time!

  2. I am definitely one of those runner's who doesn't really get pedicures. I don't have 'runner's' feet but I just don't go out of fear of getting an infection if they don't properly clean their tools and use fresh water. I know, probably ridiculous, but I'd rather clean my own feet I guess lol!

These are all great ideas. I do the Epsom salt baths, but I should regularly use lotion/scrubs on them, too!

    1. Lauren, Don't feel bad because I also have a fear of getting an infection. I go maybe once or twice a year for that reason although I have friends that go quite frequently.

    1. Deborah, that sounds like a great idea, but I am not sure I could sleep in sox!

  4. I'll get pedicure when I finish a major race, but other than that, I'm not good at taking care of my feet. I'll stretch them out during yoga so they don't feel tight, but I don't keep up appearances. I have a couple shades of nail polish when they get to a point when I can't take it anymore.

    1. I never thought about the fact that feet are stretched out well during yoga class. I am going to try to get back to Yoga this week....it has been too long!

  5. Getting pedicures is one of the main ways I help take care of my feet. Between numerous ingrown toenails (hello years of dancing in pointe shoes) and loosing one of my big toenails due to somebody stepping on my foot on an airplane about two years ago (its almost fully grown back!), I try to give my feet a lot of needed TLC.

    1. Oh my Kathryn, I can't imagine losing a big toenail. That must have been terribly painful.

  6. Definitely an important topic! I get pedicures frequently. There's always that moment when you just KNOW the nail technician is judging me for my nasty runners' feet (a few have even asked..."you're a runner, aren't you? haha) but it's totally worth it to me. I do martial arts in addition to running, so believe me, my feet need professional help! :)

  7. I love getting pedicures. Especially in the summer. I enjoy the process. I dont care how my feet look. I'm sure they have seen worse. I also love sitting in my foot massager.

  8. I was actually told the other day that I had pretty feet lol! I was in shock because I don't see them that way as a runner! I try to keep my toes polished during flip flop season and I put lotion on my feet every day but that's about it.

  9. Since I live in Phoenix and my office has a very relaxed dress code, I wear flip flops 9 months of the years. Pedicures are a must for me. I don't really enjoy them, but I can't ever make them look as nice as the salon can!
