Product Review: Dr Cool Recovery Wrap

Disclaimer: We were each provided with a Dr. Cool Recovery Wrap to try and review.  We were not compensated for this post and all opinions are our own.

Most of you probably know that I struggle with lingering knee issues.  I have been a religious KT Tape user and ice bag/frozen pea user.  To be totally honest, I've never really been interested in a fancy contraption to help ice my knee.  I have an ice pack that was from after I had knee surgery in high school and I thought it was high tech.  After hearing about Dr. Cool, I was intrigued, but still not sold.  And let me tell you, I never envisioned that I would be writing a post like this about this product!

When I opened the package, it contained a medium wrap which is typically used for knees, thighs and elbows.  I also received a Dr. Cooler which is an insulated carrying case so you can take your frozen wrap on the go.  I can imagine this would be awesome for using to tuck the wrap in a gear check bag for after a race!  But in full disclosure, I wasn't immediately sold.  This thing is supposed to help me ice my knee?  I quickly read through the instructions to figure out what to do.  It was painfully simple - wet the wrap and freeze for 20 minutes.  So I unrolled it and got it damp and placed it in my freezer.  I probably left it in there for at least an hour and then went to work icing my tired knee while I read the Sunday paper.

Mom also used hers recently to help ice her leg after her unfortunate dog bite incident (boo hiss)!
Mom's is the large size with no hole for a kneecap!

So let's talk about my thoughts, shall we?  First off, let me tell you that I was blown away with the awesomeness of this product. I didn't really think it was possible to get excited about this type of product but I've already been singing its praises to my friends...they think I'm crazy to be this excited about an icing/recovery product!  I want to share some of the specific details that really sold me on this.
* It's really easy to use - get it damp and pop in the freezer.
* It's really similar to an ace bandage, minus the annoying butterfly clips.
* Easy Velcro fastener, which also makes it adjustable depending on where you want to use it and as it becomes less stiff as it warms up a bit.
* You can still be mobile as you ice your joint or trouble spot.
* Reusable.
* You don't run the risk of ice or peas (or anything else for that matter) refreezing together in a block of ice.
* Since it's a wrap, you can ice a complete body part, whereas with an ice bag, I can only ice one side.  One distinct advantage of this is that I can ice my entire knee.

The only drawback that I could identify was the possibility to get clothing or furniture wet while icing, since the wrap is wet (so it can freeze).  But then again, I've had ice bags spring leaks many times, so this isn't really that big a deal.

I know I'll continue to use my wrap as long as my knee acts up and something tells me that will be a very long time!  Thank you Dr. Cool for letting us try this great product!  And if you're interested in one of your own, you can enter our giveaway for a chance to win a Dr. Cool wrap!

How do you take care of your nagging joints or muscles?

  3. I'm really sad that I can't enter this giveaway because I don't use Facebook. I have had issues with every joint of my body and use ice packs a lot. I may have to invest in one if I see it at the store.
