Refueling on the Go!

Have you ever gone for a long run away from home?  Whether your running route is a bit of a drive from your home or you're on vacation, recovery is still a key priority after you log some serious miles.  Lucky for you, many restaurants and cafes are offering healthy options that will help you recharge with key nutrients for muscle repair and recovery.

Tropical Smoothie: They offer whey or soy protein additions to their smoothie which helps amp the protein power of your smoothie.  I had a Mango Magic smoothie with whey protein after my 10 miler on Sunday.  It was delicious and hit the spot after a very sweaty, challenging run!

Starbucks: Their smoothies each include a whole banana, whey protein, fiber powder and milk...plus other flavors.  They're also all 300 calories or under which makes them a great refueler after shorter runs when you're not looking to replace significant calorie deficits immediately.

Convenience store finds: Pick up a low fat chocolate milk, banana or a bar that has protein and is low in fat and sugar.

How do you refuel on the go?

  1. Great recommendations! This couldn't come at a better time--I'm going out of town and will be traveling during dinner/breakfast hours :)

  3. Honestly I am horrible at this. I don't normally refuel on the go. I drink a bit of water during my runs and then some after. I am probably the only person you know that doesn't visit Starbucks either! The only products that I like from there are the Vanilla frappacinno and I can buy that at the store around the corner from my house ( probably half the price too). ~M

  4. Clif bars are my go to fuel. There's a convenience store across the street from my house and they almost always have them.

  7. I totally need to get better at this. I used to be pretty good at getting a box of protein bars or something and keeping some in my bag or in my car so I'd be able to grab them whenever I needed but I've been terrible about it recently and keep finding myself hungry and then eating the first crap I get my hands on! Good to see the Starbucks smoothies aren't terrible for you, I sort of assumed they were so I never tried one.

  9. Great ideas! I usually try to carry my fuel with me on long runs, but running without all that stuff and stopping by Starbucks is a fun idea!

  10. I always carry protein powder with me in my gym bag for emergency situations. (which happen more often than you'd think!) I just add a scoop to water and I'm good to go! If I actually have time to prep before hand, I like flaxseed muffins made with eggs and other good for you ingredients that I take out of the freezer so that by the time I'm done with my run, they are thawed and ready to eat!
