It's Marine Corps Marathon week - getting ready

Last year Christine ran Marine Corps as her first marathon. After hearing many accolades and stories about the race, it seemed a perfect race for me to try this fall.  I can't wait to get to the starting line on Sunday, but in the meantime, have started to get ready. My goals for this week include lots of sleep, staying healthy and just a few short runs!

While resting up for race day, I have started to obsess over all the little details.  Packing for a race should be easy, but each time I seem to panic a bit about making sure everything is included in my bag.  Does anyone else have this problem?

Yes, I am that runner that starts the packing process way ahead of time! Since I have not added any new music to my shuffle over the last few months, it is time.  I found this iTunes card in my desk and plan to add a few new songs to my play list.

Figuring out where to dine in the DC metropolitan area should be easy.  The hotel has a nice restaurant and since it is located in Crystal City, we will have no trouble finding local places for healthy choices pre race.  Today I will try to make some reservations and hope it is not too late!

My outfit is complete thanks to these two packages arriving yesterday when we returned from our weekend in Seattle.  You can get a little idea of what I am wearing from the photo below.  It seemed the perfect race to honor our service men and women so yes, it is a red white a blue themed race outfit!

Last but not least, I am trying to get mentally in the zone for my 4th marathon.  Some night this week, I will watch "Spirit of the Marathon" for the 5th or 6th time.  It is the perfect movie to watch before a marathon.  "Spirit of the Marathon 2" is also very good!

Do you have any great tips for getting yourself ready for a marathon?  All advice is greatly appreciated!
(Pam)

  1. Ooh I look forward to seeing your race outfit :) I am starting to grow my packing pile in my room. That is a great idea to watch Spirit of the Marathon, I haven't watched the second movie yet. Hmmm I am sure you already have this planned, but if you are taking the metro to load up your card or pass with money so you do not have to wait in a long line the morning of? Have a safe trip to DC! Hope to see you on the course!

  2. PAM!! I'm so excited for you! And yes, I obsess about this. I am not really all that OCD in my normal life but in my "prep for marathon" life I'm a crazy person! I'll also spend the week before a marathon avoiding anything and everything that might cause me to get sick! So wait, I guess I get OCD AND become a germaphobe. My poor husband;).

  3. The blog deleted my comment when I tried to post, so weird :(.

I love watching sports movies before races... Spirit of the Marathon was good (and I don't even like marathons), other good ones I like are Remembering the Titans and The Blind Side. As far as DC food goes, I like to use Yelp when I travel, but there is a chain up there called Teaism, we ate there and I liked it- it's coffee/tea/breakfast foods and really healthy!

    Good luck at MCM!!!

    1. Thanks for the tip about Yelp Amy. I can't figure out why your comment would be deleted....that is strange. I do like all the sports movies too, and both you mentioned are in our DVD library!

  4. So exciting!

I don't have any tips from experience (although I'll be needing my own in a few months!), but I can tell you to remember to breathe, relax, trust your training and enjoy your experience! You've got this!

  9. So exciting! I am obsessive about packing, and think about it a month before the travel day haha. I like to make checklists to make sure I have everything I need. Can't wait to hear how it goes - good luck!!

  10. hahaha i am also running MCM this weekend and have a way more freaked out post but along the same theme today. i am also concerned with my shuffle playlist and totally panicking i will forget something that would be that crucial thing to help me through the race. just trying to remind myself at the end of the day the most important thing not to forget is shoes and our own two feet :)

    1. As long as you are clothed and in good running shoes, everything will be fine. I had to run with music at a half marathon once because I left my shuffle on instead of charging it. That will not happen this weekend!
