Princess Half Marathon Race Recap - Christine's version

Now that Mom shared her (PR-worthy!) version of the Princess Half Marathon, I wanted to share mine. I knew Mom wanted to run this race fast and I wasn't sure I was up to the challenge...mostly because I woke up on race morning feeling pretty sore after gunning it in the 10k and getting a nice new PR. My fear during that race was that I would push too hard and not be able to run the half with Mom....well more on that later...

As you can gather from Mom's race recap, we ran together until we separated at the Magic Kingdom exit. I was very fatigued from running hard in the 10k the day before and knew I didn't have the juice in my legs to sustain her PR pace. At around mile 4 or 5, I knew I didn't have it but I told myself to hang on through Magic Kingdom to enjoy running through the castle with her just like we did 4 years ago during our first half. I was really bummed to have to say goodbye, but I knew she had worked hard for a chance to PR the half marathon distance and I wasn't about to hold her back from that goal!

As she ran past me, I enjoyed a quick walk break at the water stop just after the Magic Kingdom exit and reevaluated my race plan.  Since my legs felt like bricks, I decided to drop to a 4:1 run:walk interval to get some rest. After about two miles of this, I was feeling much better! And also during that time, I decided to text Megan to see how she was feeling. She felt about like me - tired and lacking speed. On a whim over text message in the middle of a half marathon, we decided to try to finish the race together. Given that we had started in different corals, about a mile of road separated us. As she was catching up to me, I lolly-gagged on a race course like you cannot imagine - lots of walk breaks, a quick stop at the medical tent to get some bio freeze for my achy hamstrings, and lots of photos. But really, I was having a BLAST even though I was by myself!
The slipper almost fit!
Is it vacation time again?
Sun coming up over World Drive

My first pirate photo! How could I say no as there
was no line?

The critical mile for the WDW Half and Princess Half...
not only the mile 10 "wall' but the dreaded on-ramp!
At the on ramp to head to EPCOT just past mile 10, I got the good word that Megan was just steps behind me. I told her I was running ahead to do some push-ups with Sarge. After some push-ups and a salute, I saw my sweet friend running up the hill that can seriously suck the life out of you and it was a beautiful sight!
He only asked me to do 2 push-ups....I did 3 for good measure and then
was instructud to make up the 10 seconds I wasted doing push-ups
by passing 5 runners. Sarge was serious!

Hi Megan!!!
We ran-walked the last 3 miles together and it seemed like those miles went by in a nanosecond. We grabbed a photo with the Fairy Godmother in EPCOT and then headed to the finish, where we got a nice shout out from Carissa before we finished with high fives and hugs.

One of my favorite race photos!
Once we collected our half marathon medal, it was time for the official challenge medal collection.  For this race, they took photos of you with your bib number at the expo and when you arrived in the Glass Slipper tent at the finish line area, they simply pulled up your photo and verified it was you.

We were easily able to meet up with Mom and my Aunt and I was thrilled to see Dani chatting with them...about what else but Boston marathon! Soon enough, we decided it was time to get back to the resort so we could enjoy our day in the park.

Celebrating in Magic Kingdom!
This will go down as one of the best races I've run - a fast 6 miles with Mom and a fun last half with a dear friend.  If given the choice, what would you prefer - running fast or running for fun with a friend? Clearly, I managed to choose both...well sorta!

  1. What a fun race you had! I love that you split it up that way and even managed a few character pictures in the middle! The way Jack Sparrow's looking at you is cracking me up! Congrats to all of you ladies on a great race! :) (BTW thanks for hollering at me at the 1 mile marker! It was nice to see you guys during the race!)

    1. Oh my goodness, the Pirates photo made me laugh...during and after! I have no idea why I'm laughing during the photo but I think they said something funny (or I just laugh spontaneously for no reason). Yes, it was really fun to see you mid-race! Such a pretty Belle! :)

    1. After this race, I would say it's a toss up between my preference of running fast or enjoying the moment with friends. Both leave me feeling really fulfilled.

  4. I also took it easy on this race and let my mom run ahead after we exited the Magic Kingdom. I just wish she would have went on with out me from the beginning because she would have PR-ed for sure!

    1. Aww but I'm sure she enjoyed having your company. Sometimes that matters more than a PR, just depends on the day and how you're feeling.

  5. Yay! It look like you had such a fun time, especially while you were chilling with characters! I love that Sarge was giving you a mission. So much fun!

    1. Seeing Sarge on that hill is always one of my favorite parts of the race and it was fun to accept his mission this time! He was also one of the more animated Sarge's that I've seen on a race course. It was fun!

  6. It looks like you had a blast, Christine and got to experience the best of both ways to run this race - running to MK with your mom and then running to the finish line with Megan. So fun!

  7. Great recap! Brought tears to my eyes...Running fast is always a goal but truth be have it a friend is better! I ran the NYC marathon in hopes of completing at 4:29 but I found a friend to run with and got in only a short while after and with steam to go more.

    1. Thanks Heather! I think running a full marathon with a buddy is MUCH better. I learned that lesson this year during the Richmond Marathon. My previous two marathons included a running buddy and running solo was really tough...and depressing at times! Having someone by your side, particularly during the latter miles is so helpful. You'll get that 4:29!

  8. Aw, it sounds like the race worked out perfectly for you -- so cool that you started the race with your mom and were able to meet up with a friend for the second half. You got some great photos, and its looks like you had a blast (how could you not?!) I LOVE the shot with Genie, I've never seen him in his "tourist" outfit, haha.

    1. Oh my goodness, I nearly died when I saw Genie in that outfit. Luckily there was no one stopping for the photos after MK (at least when I ran through) so it was a no brainer! :)

  10. I love how you split up and your pics are great! I felt the picture lines were shorter this year so I stopped for a ton as well!

    1. It was great to be able to stop for pictures and not wait in a line. I don't like to stand there as I'm always concerned my muscles will tense up a lot mid-race...so when I saw no lines I was really excited!

  11. Your text came at the PERFECT time for me! It was so much fun to chat and finish the race together - AND your mom got her PR! :)

    1. This was actually coming back around mile 9-ish so the crowd on the other side of the road (mile 1.5 or so) was already gone. I was totally shocked so I had to stop!

  13. Most races I try to go as fast as I can. However, I think if I were to do Princess I would go to have fun. Dress up a bit, stop for pics, etc.

    1. We are cut from similar cloth, Abby! I normally am totally focused on time so it's kind of hard for me to break out of that mindset and just enjoy the experience.

  14. Run for fun with a friend! I wish I had known where you were, although I was probably way behind you. I took my time and did a lot of walking and running after the MK (I stopped for one long photo line before the MK). My lack of training, I had to do it that way and it was fun!
