My first "brick" workout....does that mean a triathlon is on the horizon?

Last Monday, I did something that I had never planned to do.  My usual forms of exercise include the gym where I use an elliptical machine or the stationary bike, some weights and the mats.  My outdoor activities usual consist of running, walking the dog, a neighborhood bike ride or playing golf.  Imagine my surprise when I looked at my workout schedule provided by coach Sami.  The workout for the day included biking outside and swimming laps in a 25 yard pool..  My plan showed a bike ride to the fitness center where I would do a 1000 yard swim workout followed by another bike ride home.  Tom actually suggested I take the car because my swim workout the prior week was not great.  In fact, I felt sick to my stomach for the better portion of it, and actually fell short by 100 yards of the workout.

The bike ride was just 2.5 miles and mostly downhill so I arrived at the pool feeling ready to tackle my swim workout.  The pool was so warm it felt like bath water, but despite that, there was a workout to complete and I was determined to get this one completed, every last yard!  Any outdoor activity done it heat and humidity will take longer and of course this swim was no exception.
My workout consisted of a warm up with arm and leg drills followed by some sets of 50's, up to 200's at certain speeds based on feel.  I really enjoy the shorter quick swims followed by a brief rest.  However, my speedy time, is probably like a turtle for most swimmers.  However, a turtle makes it to the finish line too! Post workout, I got on my bike and completed my brick workout in approximately one hour.  I haven't peaked at my workouts for this week, but I feel certain there will be another brick in my future.

Now the big question, will I enter a triathlon?  This is such a tempting thing, except I do not own a proper road bike.  A few weeks ago, several of my teammates and Sami raced a sprint triathlon called 3 little pigs.  This is the one and only triathlon I would be interested in because of the age group awards.  Sami earned her third "little pig" trophy this year and it is adorable.  So.....if I ever try a tri, it will be this one. Oh and yes, there was only one person in my age group this year!

Have you done a triathlon?  What is your favorite event of the three?

  1. I'm definitely a triathlete at this point. I came to the sport as a runner, with well over 30 half marathons in my belt by the time I showed up at the start line for my first sprint tri. I have discovered I love triathlon and I think my favorite leg is biking. It's fun to feel so fast. Note - I am not actually fast, but when the wind is blowing in my hair face, I certainly feel like a speed demon. I also enjoy the swim training. It's hard to convince myself to get to the gym to swim (my other workouts can be done at home), but when I get out of the pool and my muscles are all shaky, I realize just how awesome of a workout it really is. Plus I love the variety in the training.

    1. My coach also likes biking best. That is my most difficult challenge since I flew over the handlebars as a kid. I will learn to conquer the bike!

  2. Good for you! I've never done a tri. Not sure about the swimming portion. I'm not a very strong swimmer...and I'm a little afraid of open water swimming. And I don't own a bike either lol!

    1. I am also afraid of open water swimming but only because of the creatures, not the swimming part.

  3. I've never done a tri. The swim part intimidates me. I'm always fearful that no matter how secure the goggles are on my face that my contacts will fall out.

    1. Oh I never thought about losing contacts. I don't wear them so that part is not an issue for me.

  4. I didn't own a bike at all when I did my first two tris! I rented one, then finally bought a road bike. Just do it! I've come to really enjoy doing a tri or two in the summer to switch up my running schedule. I love both the swim and the run....the bike I just try to survive, lol

    1. I think I am convinced to run the 3 little pigs tri next spring. However, I will borrow or rent a bike and it will be a one and done. This is totally out of my comfort zone.

  5. Great job on the workout! I'm not a swimmer so this part of a tri would be really difficult for me. I know you would do great at a tri and I agree, that trophy is adorable!!

  6. Wow, Sami has some awesomely sculpted arms! At this point I have no desire to try a tri (although there is a team one near my home where each person does one portion of it. I have been interested in doing that, but I suppose it wouldn't really be a tri then...lol). I have not swim at all this year yet!!!! -M

  7. I haven't done a triathlon and won't because I find the swim to be way too intimidating. Kudos to people who do them though! I think a small local triathlon would be perfect!

    1. I would be totally intimidated to do a triathlon with an open water swim, but in a pool it would be manageable.

  8. I'm a horrible swimmer... actually, I don't. I can survive in the water and not drown, but I definitely can't swim to the point of being able to do a pool workout or even thinking of a tri. If I wanted to, I'd take lessons or something to really learn the strokes. It sounds like you survived the workout though which was a good thing. Our neighborhood pool also feels like hot bath water right now, or at least it did last week. We've had a cold front this week so it might actually feel refreshing!

    1. Amy you seem like the perfect candidate for a tri with your strong running ability. Never say never, because the swimming is great cross training for running too!

  9. Awesome! Maybe one day you will have on in your horizon:)
I haven't done them before, like you I don't own a good bike. Although if I am ever feeling rich and have an extra thousand laying around I might start shopping for one, just in case:)
I have a sister who competes in them, she's killer and top competition she loves doing them to win cash on certain weekends:) I only wish I was as fast as her, however swimming is not my strong suit:)

    1. Wow, that is very impressive about your sister. The bikes are really expensive so I hope to borrow one if I decide to race that one sprint tri next year.

    1. Your main focus is on your horse so I certainly can understand how training would be difficult. Besides, you win awesome prizes at riding!

  11. You go for it girl! You so got it, Pam!! I think it would be hard, at least the swimming portion, but this tri sounds super fun!

    1. This tri only includes a 10 lengths of the pool swim which would be really easy!

  12. I just completed my 5th tri on Sunday. I love them, even though trying to get all the training in during the week is hard, it is so fulfilling.

  13. I am very intrigued by the triathalon but the swim scares me as I don't know how to swim. So I would need to take lessons first, but I"m not sure I have the guts for it!

    1. Sue, you are such a strong runner that you could do this if you put your mind to it. I was lucky to learn to swim as a child and I really am enjoying the workouts now.
