Friday 5: Foods to enjoy in Hawaii!

In just a few weeks, Adam and I will be headed off on our Hawaiian honeymoon. We are both so excited and have spent many hours poring over guidebooks, websites, and seeking input from friends and family who have traveled there. We'll be visiting the big island, Kauai, and Oahu. Sometimes when one of us isn't having a great day, we'll start talking about our trip which is a great incentive for us both. Recently, we started talking about foods and drinks that we're excited to try and I figured this was a good take on today's Friday Five post with the DC Trifecta (Mar, Cynthia, Courtney)...I mean we'll be eating Hawaiian foods in the fall so why not?!

1. Fruity Cocktails like Mai Tais: Hawaii is famous for its mai tais, which is a drink made with dark rum, curaƧao, and lime juice. They're pretty delicious and I know that our first evening will include a few of these!

2. Fresh seafood! This is high on both of our food wish lists. Being far out in the Pacific Ocean, Hawaii boasts some unique seafood. On one of my work trips to Honolulu, I had the chance to try ono and it was amazing! I'm also interested to try Tuna Poke.

The famed Giovanni's shrimp truck - it's as good as you've heard!
Duke's is the place where I tried Ono. The restaurant was amazing and it lived
up to the hype!
3. Kona coffee! Adam and I both enjoy coffee quite a bit so we're eager to visit the coffee plantations in Kona and give it a try!

4. Local breweries: Adam is really into beer and has done quite a bit of research on the breweries in Hawaii. He discovered that Kauai Island Brewing Company is the westernmost US brewery so you better believe we'll be making a stop there on our travels. I also would like to visit Kona Brewing Company. Apparently the brewery is a beautiful setting (which is a little out of the ordinary for a brewery!) and the food is great. I think this will make a good post-hike or post-snorkeling lunch stop.

5. Kalua Pork: We have booked a luau for our first Thanksgiving as husband and wife (insert tween girl squeal) and everyone tells us that the Kalua pork is incredible!

Have you been to Hawaii? Any foods or drinks that we must have? If you have restaurant recommendations for any of the three islands we'll be visiting, I would love them!

  3. Tuna poke was my jam while we were in Hawaii on our honeymoon! You can actually get it in the shopping markets/grocery stores and it is just as delicious as it is in restaurants cause all the fish is so fresh. We ate at the Kona Brewing Co restaurant our first night there, and I remember them having really good appetizers and pizzas. Not sure what you guys have planned for activities while you're there, but while you're on the Big Island I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend doing the manta ray snorkeling -- one of the coolest and most unique things I've done in my entire life! We did it with a company called Sunlight on Water, which was great, but there are a number of companies you can book with and get the same experience.

  5. My mouth is watering thinking about all of the delicious seafood that we had when we went to Hawaii for our honeymoon. Some of our favorite restaurants from the trip included eating at Ocean House and Hy's Steakhouse in Waikiki, and Cafe Pesto in Hilo on the Big Island. Hy's is a splurge, but the prime rib there was absolutely delicious, especially if you're looking for a break one night from seafood. It came highly recommended from Preston's grandmother, and from the food to the service to the old school atmosphere, it didn't disappoint whatsoever. I don't have any recommendations for Kauai since we went to Maui instead, but are hoping to go to Kauai for a future anniversary trip, so I'll have to come to you for recommendations after you guys return. You and Adam are going to have a fabulous time!

  6. So exciting & I'm so happy for you! Have a fabulous time relaxing and eating your way thru Hawaii! Now for the food, first up breakfast and the absolute best place in Oahu is Moke’s Bread & Breakfast for their famous Lilikoi pancakes, my husband's family lives in Kailua and they totally recommend Moke's. It can get crowded but it's totally worth it or go on a weekday, they are closed on Tuesdays though. Also on Oahu, if you want a really nice but pricey dinner out and can get a reservation, Alan Wong's ginger crusted onaga is sooooo good. And of course no trip to Hawaii would be complete without Shave Ice. We had so much yummy shave ice but I think my favorite was Island Snow in Kailua, even President Obama is a fan :), it's in the same spot as a clothing store and if you look up their website it comes up with a skater style clothing store, interesting. I've not been to the Big Island or Kauai but you are going to have so much fun!

    1. Yes, it still surprises me that they haven't franchised that truck given the insane food truck/dive spot popularity these days.

  9. CONGRATULATIONS and what a great place to spend your honeymoon! First of all, your site is so cute! I feel happy just being on here! Love your take on the 5 foods here. I've been a few times (love it so much) and my first and foremost is definitely the Luau Pork. What a wonderful way to spend your first married Thanksgiving! There is a rum tasting place in Kauai that was neat to visit. I think it's was also a pineapple plantation? Anyhow, it was cooL tasting different rums that they'd made on site and the grounds were so pretty. Also, we got hooked on Bubba's Burgers chili and rice. I started serving my chili over rice after we got back. There's my suggestions. I will really look forward to your recap! Have a wonderfully romantic and awesome time!
