Weekly Workout Roundup: May 30th

Summer arrives on June 20th, but honestly summer arrived here in North Carolina this week. The temperatures were really warm, there was abundant sunshine and the pool water has hit the low 80's.

Post run, sitting here is always a treat.
Spending lots of time outdoors was the plan on most every day and my house usually takes a back seat to fun and sporting activities during this time of year. At least I got my laundry piles whittled down by mid week, but today will be a busy day cleaning clothing and the house.  Do you have tons more wash when it is warm?  We seem to fill our basket almost daily.

Workouts this week were much more challenging with the arrival of not only warmer temperatures, but the lovely humidity that descends on us this time of year.  Carrying a water bottle is a must, and I usually stop a time or two during most every run to catch my breath and cool off.  Every summer since my obsession with running commenced, I tell myself these hard runs in the summer will pay off with fall races.  With perfect weather, golf was back on my calendar since my races are in the distance.  The torque motion in golf can cause my right hip to act up, so during heavy marathon training, golf is put on the back burner. Fortunately, boating is harmless to my running health and with sunshine and blue skies, we set out several days to explore the local waterways.  Even Lulu enjoyed a day out, but she usually ends up in my lap.

While out for my long run on Saturday, I was busy cheering (in my head) for Christine and Megan as they ran their races, the Chick Fil A 10k and the Bayshore Marathon.  They both had great days and Christine will be writing a race recap soon.

  1. Yep, summer came blasting in this week! It was in the 80s and humid all week! I was worried it would be humid for my race, but in an odd twist, Mother Nature blew in (it was windy) a gorgeous day. Perfect, really!

    1. Every runner despises humidity, but training in it will make us stronger, or at least I keep telling myself that!

  3. Yep, our pool is 84. In a couple of weeks we will be complaining that it feels like bath water. I know you must be enjoying the new boat, Pam. I can't wait to get in ours later today. My laundry basket is full of beach towels this time of year. It's never-ending! Christine, I'm glad you had a great 10k race. I can't wait to hear the details. Thanks for linking with us ladies.

    1. I rarely complain about the pool water being too hot. I agree about the beach towels....plenty to wash all the time.

    1. I know we are lucky. My friends in the UK are still wearing coats and long pants (in the northeast), so I feel kind of bratty complaining about the heat and humidity.

  8. The picture of that pool and protein shake makes me pretty jealous! It is warm here, but the sun hasn't been out and it's just not a fun time for the pool yet. I know my runs later this summer, I will want to immediately jump in... after I ditch the ipod, of course :). It has been a mild May, at least.

Can't wait to read about Christine's race and hope y'all had a good Memorial Day!

  11. Haha, I feel like I do nothing but wash running clothes all year long, but in the summer the situation becomes a bit more...pressing, let's just say, lol. Summer is here in NJ, too. And I am NOT happy about it. ;) It has been such a drastic change, temperature-wise, in such a short period of time!
