Weekly Workout Roundup: June 6th

It's hard to believe the year is almost half over.  We are both in a lull in terms of upcoming races, but with the arrival of summer heat and humidity, neither of us is too bothered to have blank spaces on our calendars.  After a strong long run last Saturday, a slight setback happened when I woke up with a dull ache in my leg and foot on Sunday.  Unfortunately it continued the next couple days, but after some rest and recovery, I ran without a problem Saturday.  Hopefully my planned Tuesday run will go well and this was just a freak couple of days.  And speaking of Saturday, the humidity was horrible and since we were out later than normal Friday night, my early start was not to be.  I wore a new tank from Brooks that was lightweight and felt great even when the back was saturated after a few miles. It is this one and I found it discounted on the Running Warehouse website along with a pair of my beloved Ravennas at a greatly reduced price.

Lulu loves the post run cool down!

The highlight of my Sunday bike ride included a stop to photograph these two swans who looked so peaceful.  While I love the look of swans, keeping my distance is always key since they have been known to go after humans if you get to close to them or their nest.

And this little guy was in our backyard last night and Tom picked him up to take him back to the pond nearby.

Between turtles and bunnies, our yard seems to be a magnet for wildlife.  And those bunnies are driving us nuts.  They are eating the impatiens flowers, getting into the vegetable garden and hardly move even when you are 3 feet away.  Tom is on a mission to eradicate them from our yard and it will be interesting to see who wins that battle.  Right now, I am betting on the bunnies since the mesh he has added to our wrought iron fence has already been chewed by said bunnies.  I think he is ready to get a BB gun ( kidding, can you say illegal?)

And now that you have heard all my wildlife tales, here are our workouts for the week:

  1. Glad your leg is feeling better.
Last year we had a snapper turtle in our yard and it was huge. From a distance I thought it was a pile of cement. When I walked over to investigate I was surprised how large it was. I never saw a turtle that large before. I have no idea where it came from seeing as the nearest water source is a tiny creek down a huge hill and across the highway!

    1. I was surprised how fast a turtle can move despite their reputation for being slow.

  2. The bunnies are overtaking our yard this year. And the new pup just ignores them. What dog does that? It's better than the skunk infestation we dealt with the last couple of years, tho.

    1. Our dog does the exact same thing. I remember when I was young, our Yorkie went crazy chasing the bunnies and we always prayed she would never catch one. Thank goodness she didn't.

  3. Glad you had a good weekend! Great job on the workouts - hope your leg continues to feel better! :) We had a turtle visitor on Saturday. She came to lay eggs in the corner of my flower bed. I only knew she was there because she chose her spot that happened to be in front of madalynns window! Haha!

  4. I'm glad your leg was feeling better after a bit of rest! And yes, the bunnies are resourceful. We seem to have a lot of them in our neighborhood too.

    1. I love to see bunnies since they are so cute, but I hate them eating our flowers and things in the vegetable garden.

  5. Glad to hear that you're feeling a bit better after some rest. You definitely had an active week, even with the unplanned rest.

  6. So glad your leg and foot are ok! I hate when scares like that happen! Runners don't have time for that lol! We have a bunny that keeps coming in our yard too. It's funny that they aren't that scared of people! I was sitting on the back porch drinking my coffee one morning and he just came right up in the yard, looked at me, and continued on munching on our grass!

    1. No, our bunnies are definitely not scared of us either. They enjoy eating too much!

  7. Swans really go after humans? Whoa- I had no idea! If it were me I would try to get really close. And I love your turtle, too!

    1. They do, but not often. My friend has a beautiful pond with two swans on the drive up to her farm, and she told me the story about them coming after her one day when she was a little too close.

  8. I'm glad your leg and foot are okay! I hate niggles like that that are worriesome, although I guess if you're not training for a race now is the best time if you have to skip a run or two. I am so jealous of your pool view right now!

    1. I love having a pool Amy. It really is great all summer long.

  9. Oh man, the bunnies have come our way too. They seem to be staying away from the garden for now...mostly because I caught them eating the tops of the garlic plants the other day & they didn't seem to like them, so I wonder if they think it's all garlic...fine by me!

    1. Oh I need to tell Tom about the garlic. Maybe we will plant that too.

  10. Same here with the bunnies & Mr. Judy, who also put mesh in a lot of places but the bunnies just get through it anyway. There was one sitting on our front walk when Lola & I came back from our walk today. And there's a bird's nest in the light above our front door -- we rarely go in that way, but of course UPS has to come up. They don't seem disturbed by humans.

Here's hoping that the foot was just one of those things.

    1. Yes, those darn bunnies can eat through the mesh. They must have very sharp teeth.

  11. It's so scary to have those dull aches and pains. I am very relieved to hear it went away on its own after a few days! That is so exciting that both of you are training for Disneyland Paris races - talk about the experience of a lifetime! Humidity is the WORST. It is even worse than heat, in my opinion. Running Warehouse has so many awesome deals - I have to hold myself back from looking otherwise I'll go crazy buying stuff! Your wildlife pictures are beautiful. The grass in the turtle photo looks so green it's almost day-glo!!!

    1. I also avoid the Running Warehouse site, but I wanted to order a past model of my beloved Brooks running shoes and that came up in a Google search. And of course I ended up buying the tank top too.

  12. My husband saw a fox in our back yard today. That may not sound surprising, but we live in the inner suburbs with neighbors pretty close! I have a 10K on Saturday and then that's it until September. I'm not a fan of summer racing.

    1. Wow, I would be nervous about a fox because they would probably go after our dog. Good luck with your race this weekend, hope it's a bit cooler.

  13. Great workout weeks ladies!!!
I'm glad that leg pain went away quickly!
I wish I had turtles coming into my yard, that would be awesome (I love turtles, ha ha)
Love your pictures, I just txt my sister last night and told her I was in desperate need of a pool day, so I was inviting myself over to her house this week for some pool and sun, :)
Sounds like you've been having a great week!!!

    1. Ahh Kristy, I am also crazy about turtles. In fact, my bathroom has tons of turtles as decor. Swimming with the giant sea turtles is one of my favorite things to do on vacation.

    Darn bunnies.

  15. I love little furry critters, but I had to replace several tomato plants last weekend because the original plants were MIA. We've seen bunnies near the raised garden, so we're assuming they are the culprits.

    1. I love the bunnies too, but not when they are eating stuff in our garden. Tom is working hard to send them to our neighbors yards.

  16. Is it just the angle of the picture or is that turtle huge? It sure looks like it. We've seen several out at the campground. Those and a couple gators. Eeeek! They didn't bother us and we sure kept our distance!

    1. No, the turtle was not that big...maybe 12 inches. I would freak with the gators, but I know you just run in a zig zag and they can't get you! It also helps if you are faster than the other people in your group. :)

  17. I see bunnies when I run but they aren't in my yard. It could be due to my two hyper dogs. But let's talk about squirrels -- ugh they eat everything and drink out of the pool! Disneyland Paris sounds so cool! Thanks for linking!
